Language Standards & Levels

What are language proficiency standards, and why does CORE Languages use them? Across many companies, schools, and other institutions, language proficiency standards are a way of ensuring quality standards for levels of language skills are met. Without these, it would be difficult to properly assess clients at the start and end of their course to monitor and evaluate progress, as well as translate certificates and skill levels from one country to the next.

Language Standards & Levels

At CORE Languages, we primarily use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL or CEFR), which has its equivalencies in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELP) in the U.S. If you are not familiar with CEFR, the levels are organized by letters (A = beginner, B = intermediate, C= advanced) and numbers (1, 2, 1.1, 1.2, etc.). So, if you see a course offered on our website like “German A1.2,” that would be an advanced beginner course.

“What if I am an American with completed coursework in a foreign language but unsure of what level I would be according to CEFR?” No problem! CORE Languages offers placement exams to assess your level and find the right course for you. If you are wanting to take part in a group language course on-site at your company, but you feel you need some review in order to brush up on your skills, we have extra content available for your convenience through our Learning Management System (LMS). Our LMS gives you the freedom to participate in a course that is a little above – if you are up to the challenge – or below your level, if you prefer to reinforce what you have previously learned.

Upon successful completion of a CORE Languages course, you are awarded a certificate indicating the level of and language passed. For those interested in taking international placement tests like the Goethe Institute or TOEFL exams, our course certificates are in line with the material typically covered in their courses and on exams. Do you need to be certified at a specific level of a language for an international assignment or other work-related need? Our instructors can help you achieve your professional goal. Planning on taking the TOEFL or IELTS English exam in order to get into an English-speaking university or college program? If you need help with preparing for a specific exam, we would be happy to help you!
